Stravinsky
Stravinsky wrote volumes of music but in contrast with his
orchestral works, compositions for piano make up a small portion of
his overall output. Works suited for the youngest students include
eight pieces based on five notes, called Les Cinq Doigts. (Kalmus,
Music Sales, Masters Music Publications)
Stravinsky's pieces are also included in collections, such as
Music for Millions, Vol. 17 (Music Sales)
More Easy Classics to Moderns (Music Sales)
Essential Keyboard Repertoire, vol. 2 (Alfred)
An Anthology of Piano Music, vol. 4, The Twentieth Century
(Music Sales)
Piano Masters - the Contemporary Masters (Alfred)
Stravinsky for Piano (Boosey and Hawkes)
Hal Leonard offers an easy-piano edition of Fantasia 2000.
Schott Music offers an edition of Circus Polka.
Recommended Recordings
C.D. "Stravinsky in America" with Michael Tilson Thomas
conducting the London Symphony Orchestra (RCA/BMG) includes many
interesting pieces, such as the "Circus Polka" or the orchestral
version of Stravinsky's arrangement of the "Star-Spangled Banner."
Another C.D., "Stravinsky: Works for Piano," was released by EMI
Classics and is a two-disc compilation of the most important works
with the piano. It includes Sonata in F# minor, Etudes, movements
from Petrushka, Piano-Rag-Music, and Tango for piano.
Stravinsky: Piano Music (Naxos) is performed by Peter Hill and
includes Les Cinq Doigts, Sonata, Serenade, movements from
Petrushka, and other selections.
Game
To teach tempo markings play musical charades with a group
class. Have students draw cards with a speed (in Italian) and then

Answers for April:
Answer to Beginner's Corner What's Wrong? (page 5)
Picture 1: Left hand wrist is too low and the thumb is almost
flat. Right hand wrist is also a bit low, which makes the pinky a
bit flat, too.
Picture 2: Student is leaning back instead of
slightly forward. His head is leaning down and is buried in his
shoulders. Arms are straight instead of bending slightly at the
elbows. Fingers are hitting the keys flat.
Note: you could develop your own game of What's
Wrong. Demonstrate a posture or hand position that has one or more
errors and ask the student to name the problem and describe or
demonstrate how to fix it. The student could also take a turn. This
would work well in a group class as each child takes a turn.
