2012 Piano Explorer Composition Contest
Life in the Ocean
Life in the ocean is colorful and
varied, full of amazing sea creatures and plants - small and large
fish, crustaceans, jelly fish, majestic mammals, corals, seaweed.
Oceans are huge, mysterious, and sometimes cruel; they are home to
thousands of species.
Pick part of ocean life that fascinates you
and write a musical composition that describes it. You can visit an aquarium,
look at photos in books about nature, or watch television shows about ocean
life for inspiration. On the back of the music you must write a short
description of what your music is about.
Check the rules below and use the tips in
the issue to make sure that ideas in your composition are solid and well
developed. Good Luck!

Deadline: March 15, 2012
Rules:
1. You or your teacher must subscribe to Piano Explorer. (Teachers
must have a subscription for each student entering the contest - if 3
students enter the contest, for example, you must receive at least 3
copies each month.) (Go to
http://www.instrumentalistmagazine.com/magazinestore/catalog/Piano_Explorer-28-1.html
to order or email
[email protected])
2. Only solo piano music will be considered.
3. Write your name, age, address, phone number, and teacher's name on the
back of the music.
4. All submissions must be postmarked or faxed by the deadline, March 15,
2012. (We are not responsible for pieces that are lost or delayed in the
mail.)
5. All compositions must be written by students. (Parents and teachers may
help write down the notes.) Music may set in a computer program or
handwritten - but it must be legible and free of basic errors. (For
example if there should be 4 beats in a measure based on the time
signature, an error would be a measure with 3.)
6. Do not quote other pieces of music in your compositions.
7. Keep a copy of the music for yourself. We cannot return any
submissions.
8. Judging is based on creativity, musical ideas, and how well the music
applies the contest theme. (We will not discuss the merits of particular
pieces with students, parents or teachers.)
Draw a picture to
go with the piece. It might appear on the cover!
