100-Day Challenge: We continue to receive 100-day practice challenge sheets from students. They are pouring in from students as young as 4! We have also heard from a number of teachers that this has really increased practicing and enthusiasm in their studios. We will continue this challenge in the upcoming year, and students may start at any time. Summer Music Fun
Summer can be a great time for students to explore different genres of music. Encourage students to find local venues with summer music programs - anything from parades and music in the park to major festivals with full concerts.
Ask students to listen to music in different genres - such as march or ragtime, featured in this issue. Ask them how the beat and rhythm differs between two styles. In this example from the strong march beat to the syncopated, jazzy sound of ragtime. Then they can try to compose a piece in one of the styles.
