100-Day Challenge: We continue to receive 100-day practice challenge sheets from students. They are pouring in from students as young as 4! We have also heard from a number of teachers that this has really increased practicing and enthusiasm in their studios. We will continue this challenge in the upcoming year, and students may start at any time. Check out the students who have played for 100 days at http://www.instrumentalistmagazine.com/100%20day%20challenge.php
Baroque vs. Classical - Ask students to listen to the recordings from the September issue and for the October issue. They could pick one from each period and write down several things that differ between them.
Composing Ideas - Have students write spooky (or funny) Halloween pieces using the ideas on page 6. Listen to some spooky music to get some ideas, including Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," "Night on Bald Mountain "by Mussorgsky, and "Danse Macabre" by Saint-Saens.
If you are not a fan of Halloween music, have students explore Alberti bass accompaniment. For younger students, give them an Alberti bass pattern on a couple of chords and ask them to come up with a melody or do the reverse. Send in the best ones to us at the address below.
Music Corner - Encourage your students to experiment with composition. They can send their pieces to us at Music Corner, Piano Explorer, 200 Northfield Road, Northfield, Illinois 60093.
